Bil, A couple of points re: your post to markcm. The BBE Sonic Maximizer comes in several forms.
There are rack versions (mono and stereo), the Sonic Stomp (which is a pedal) and the Sonic Maximizer which is the plugin. If you were using a hardware form, you wouldn't add the plugin and vice versa. It isn't an effect as such, though in Mixcraft it would be treated as an effect.
Basically, speakers knock a signal out of frequency alignment so the whole spectrum reaches the ear of the listener at different times, resulting in muddiness. The BBE technology introduces a delay curve over the spectrum in order to neutralise the speaker issue. The resulting sound is clearer, punchier and allows individual instruments to cut through the mix better.
The power of the 882i and 482i hardware processors now in plug-in form. Use the BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In to restore high frequency definition and detail to your sound while re-focusing bass frequencies. The new D82 Sonic Maximizer Plugin delivers the full capabilities of its hardware predecessors, the BBE 882i and BBE 482i Sonic Maximizers. BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In is compatible with all VST, AU, and RTAS hosts on Mac OS X, Windows XP and VISTA.
BBE D82 now works with Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Digtial Peformer, Cakewalk, and many more professional audio applications. Great Got this for the 49.99 stupid deal as well, I had been looking at getting it for awhile, and when the deal came up I pulled the trigger.
After trying the disc, I. Got this for the 49.99 stupid deal as well, I had been looking at getting it for awhile, and when the deal came up I pulled the trigger. After trying the disc, I called BBE tech support and was thoroughly surprised when a human voice answered immediately.
He was super helpful and I was up and running in a few minutes. As far as the plug-in, Awesome!
I believe one of the other reviews talked about it being an instant improvement, and this is totally true. First thing I did was use it on some tracks from an acoustic song I had just finished tracking for a friend. The Gibson J-200 sounded even better than it already did, so much fuller, warmer and life-like. It also really helped on her vocals, like the guitar, it made them more 'real' sounding. Hard to explain without simply hearing it. It fits on most any track and will generally improve anything.I would highly recommend this, great plug-in that you will definitely use enough to feel you got your moneys worth.
I would easily pay the 99.99 to have this plug-in. Try Something Else! I love the hardware version of the BBE Sonic Maximizer. I'm sure this version is good too, BUT, when it comes to this software version, I have been completely paralized. I love the hardware version of the BBE Sonic Maximizer. I'm sure this version is good too, BUT, when it comes to this software version, I have been completely paralized. I have been unable to use it because of the crappy authorization process.
I mean, I own this plugin, I just can't use it. The problem is, whether you choose the iLok dongle to download your license, or you use the equally crappy Nomad Factory online authorization, be prepared for an unending nightmare! In my case, I went with Nomad Factory to authorize my copy because this seemed like the much easier way to go. (iLok has INCREDIBLY poor reviews and customer support, so I went the other route-BIG mistake!!) After dealing with a very rocky installation for MANY HOURS, I contacted Nomad Factory.
Their 'expert' contacted me (e-mail support only) but he completely IGNORED the problem and gave me some bogus instructions that I had already tried. Anyway, it didn't help. An entire day was wasted trying to download ONE plugin! Thanks Nomad Factory! So it seems that either method of authorization is a complete pain in the rump!
PLEASE do yourself a favor. DO NOT waste $100 on this plugin! Find something else!
Here's what you get in the box: CD in a paper sleeve (pretty typical) AND. NOTHING ELSE! Well, that's not entirely true. You do get a sticker that YOU have to attach to the CD. This contains the serial number. Here's what's on the CD: Would you believe it? NO SOFTWARE!!
Well, that's not entirely true. You get a very crappy WORD DOC with a DEAD LINK so you can DOWNLOAD the plugin.
That's right, a DEAD LINK to DOWNLOAD the software from their website! Couldn't they just tell you this in the beginning? Your $100 gets you nothing but a serial number! So I went to the website myself and attempted to download, but I ran into the above nightmare. This IS a licensed copy. I was able to successfully download the software and license from the website. The serial number is good.
It's just that the authorization process will completely stop you in your tracks! Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: I love the hardware version of the BBE Sonic Maximizer. The serial number is good. It's just that the authorization process will completely stop you in your tracks! Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: I bought this a while ago at the Stupid Deal price. After going through the somewhat difficult authorization procedure (which others have described), I am very happy that I did. The D82, when used tastefully on audio groups or the master bus, does something very nice that really can't be replicated with EQ.
Rarely do I have the 'lo' or 'process' controls set above 2-3 - 'just a dab'll do ya!' - but I've really come to wish that there was a TDM version of this for use on our venue's SC48 console.I've used BBE hardware Maximizers in the past, and they ended up becoming doorstops. This one I like. Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: I added this plugin to my master bus on a 50-track mix.
Immediately there was a huge difference in clarity and punch. The registration process is a PAIN. You have to download the updated plugin from Nomad Factory, then run their updated installer, rather than the instructions they give you. They should recall the packages that are out right now and replace it with the current version. They discontinued the old registration process in oct 2010. Wtf nomad factory.

Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: Good product. I waited for it to become a Stupid Deal of the Day and when it did, I jumped on it and have no regrets whatsoever about getting it. It works as advertised.
There are few features in this product but given that few features are necessary, this is not necessarily a negative. Just 3 dials to tweak but I find myself using the Presets most of the time.
The program installed easily enough in my Macintosh and runs smoothly with Logic and Garage Band. Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: As mentioned by others, the authorization process is wacko. I lucked out and managed to search and click on the right links and had the plugin up and running in about 10 min. If you go to BBE's site, navigate to their page for the 'sonic sweet', follow the link to nomad's site at the bottom and go to their FAQ section, you're lead to where you need to go to authorization.Don't bother installing the software on the disc. The first step once you get through nomad's FAQ is to uninstall the disc version and install the version supplied by them.Once working the plugin is awesome.
I bought it on a whim just because it was only $. Easily worth much more than that. Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: This thing is is a budget studio god send! It really makes ANYTHING you put on it sound better.
Anyone who knows the simple rules will be able to jump right in and start playing. UNO contains various options with quick play like the difficulty and points to win the match. Candy crush download for blackberry curve 9320.
This plugin in can be worth much more than this price. It made my kick sound HUGE, distorted guitar sound thick and bity, bass is pulled out, and the rest of the drums are loud and clear with no distortion.the onlt thing i found is that sometimes it doesnt like to work well with some other plugins, but alot of the time it is just the setting you have on that certain plugin. Just a little messing around with the settings and it'll clear right up. Good Job BBE!
Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: This is a great tool for studio or live use. It sounds better than other exciter / enhancer products on the market and I have tried about four different brands. I have used the outboard units before but haven't used the plug-in yet and you will see why: I gave it a 2 for overall because I bought it for a new studio that doesn't have internet yet and you cannot use this product without an internet connection (though it doesn't list 'internet connection' in the system requirements on the box. I tried to authorize it over the phone with a friend on the internet but the authorization code is as longer than a freakin paragraph! We didn't have enough time. So I haven't used the plug in yet, I may have to bring the studio computer home (pain in the butt) or wait until we have internet. It would have been easier to get a bootleg copy!
Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: I got this at the Stupid Deal price of $49.99, and I'm glad I did. However, the CD that you get in the mail is NOT the correct installer - it seems the company has switched to a new security technology. You have to download the plug-in from the Web site. I'm sort of wondering why the disc was shipped at all? I only found this out by reading the company's support page after all sorts of installation errors.A great deal at $49.99, but keep in mind that you'll need to do some Googling to get this up and running. Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: This is by far the best bang for the buck (well at the time of purchase). I bought this for a steeply low price of a Jimmy Johns sub with a pickle and a bag of chips.
However, I noticed the price went back up. Maybe someone fat fingered and put the wrong price, which I luckily caught. Well anyways. It can be used on many things but I find it very helpful for bringing out dubstep snares and giving them clarity with a little more 'weight'. For the people saying it doesn't work or it's outdated, any software given on a CD is usually outdated. Your best bet is to go to the site and download the most recent version. I didn't even pop in the cd once I received it.
I just went to the site, which was kind of a pain since Nomad factory owns these BBE plugins and it doesn't say on the BBE site. I wish they would of just emailed me the serial and link for Downloading the plugin instead of waiting for a big box, a cd that is a third size smaller than the box and a key. Kind of a waste of a box and the time you have to wait to receive it.
Excellent product overall tho. Would definitely recommend it to people.
Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: Bought this as a 'Stupid Deal Of The Day' and it has worked out so far. As far as the software, it is great for putting on that final sparke to your completed mix.
Just be sure to not over do it. The part that was confusing was the install and authorization. Basically, the program on the disk was 32-bit and did not want to install on Windows 7. Luckily, you go to the website and download both the 32 and 64-bit versions. Also, the box says that you have to use an iLok, which I have. However, Nomad Factory (the company that administers the product) no longer uses the iLok and uses internet authentication. This worked out ok, but if you had planned on using this on multiple computers with abandon, it can not be done.
You are allowed a number of authorizations and it is only your guess if it will be sufficient. Wish there were more presets. Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: Ads more liveliness to my final mixes.
Makes the vocals and guitars shine though more. Easy to make the low end of tracks equal to each other. A good way to match volume from song to song.
I was very satisfied with my mixes but A/B comparisons are night and day. Does not perform miracles and put bad recordings at the level my recordings. Adds a final touch of more clarity. My older recordings can now be played back to back without sounding like they came from another session, as I use different instrument setups on every recording. I did buy at a discount but had I heard a demonstration from a friend I would pay twice the retail price. Comments about BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-In: Got this even cheaper than SDOTD, they must have been clearing out the warehouse.
This really does the job, more clarity, articulation, big bottom, big top end. Very easy to over use, it will bite your face off if you're not careful. The authorization is a big hassle, the only thing you need the CD for is the serial number.
Nomad Factory is a pain and unclear about what to do, but it can be done, be patient, take your time and read all the garbled instructions 3 or 4 times. And you should be able to get it to work after a while. Glad I don't need any Nomad Factory plugins.
All it is really is an exciter and bass harmonics box much like the Aphex. You can find equivalents to both in the JS effects in Reaper. Hugebooty and LOSER/Exciter if I remember correctly. Do BBE Sonic Maximizer processors create any harmonics like exciter and enhancer effects units?
BBE technology does not work like exciter and enhancer effects. Typcially, exciter effects are associated with creating artificial harmonics through small amounts of overdrive in the high frequency band. This can prove useful in some recording studio situations, particularly in remastering older analog tapes. However, in today's recording and playback audio environments, there is no need to artifically simulate high freqencies lost through degradation of the original source tapes. Enhancers are generally associated with equalization, however there are some products which attempt to combine exciter and enhancer effects with the result being harsh and fatiguing to the ear with no actual improvement in clarity and definition. Generally, enhancer products are marketed to appear as though they are more sohpisticated than multiband or parametric equalizer units, however, this is seldom true. BBE is totally different than exciter and enhancer effects units.
BBE High Definition Sound technology is not an effect, but restructures the signal in such a way which allows speakers to more correctly and faithfully reproduce the signal. The best analogy for BBE technology is like eyeglasses for your audio system. In my experience, the better the source material, the less the BBE has a positive effect. On poorly recorded sources is where the benefit is the most dramatic. I can still remember years ago trying the first BBE plugin and I thought it was the greatest thing in the world.
I still use it, but generally find less is more. If I use it on the master the knobs are both usually between 0-1. Some guitar tracks can sound especially good with higher amounts of processing (both knobs around 12 o'clock), but like any spice try not to overdo it.
Nomad factory has just released a new version which I am excited to try (pun intended). As for similar effects, I've had a lot of luck with the Crysonic SpectraliveNXT plugin, although its quite CPU intensive unlike the BBE. On drum submixes DiscoDSP Thrillme can work quite well.:).
D82 Sonic Maximizer Plugin The BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer software plug-in reproduces original program material with the subtlety, nuance and presence of a live performance. You can expect all of the same qualities of this plug-in that you’d find in the hardware version of the BBE Sonic Maximizer:. Low frequencies become tighter, punchy and well defined.
Highs are more articulate, detailed and present. Vocals and speech intelligibility are greatly improved. Plucked and percussive sounds, such as guitars, drums and pianos are cleaner.

I thought i would let you know about a couple of free VST sonic enhancers released here: Basically, there are inspired by hardware processors like BBE & others(2 bands exciters), and were released on the Reaper forum as JS plugins. Bodan from Element plugin compiled then as native plugin for Windows and Mac, available as 32 & 64bit, with vumeters and over.
All the plugins on this page are full 64 bit path input to output with double internal precision. They are written in C, conform to VST 2.4 standard and should be compatible with all major VST hosts on market. They're free, so you can grab them and use them if you like.
